Barleythorpe Cottage

A few weeks ago, Charlie and I took a trip over to our neighbouring county of Rutland to photograph this stunning, quirky cottage. It had been a run-down, dark little cottage when the owners got hold of it, but with the help of local developers Brown and Jones, they have transformed it into a beautiful family home. The whole house was stripped back and renovated and a simple, but characterful, oak frame extension was fitted to the rear of the house, to fill it with natural light and add some much-needed living space.
The customers decided to use our Umbrian Limestone in a free-length pattern throughout the kitchen/dining room, to remain in keeping with the character and age of the cottage. The subtle variation in tones and texture in the stone work perfectly with the dark blue kitchen, simple white walls and warm wooden furniture. I love the customer’s effortless, minimal styling. They had the confidence to let the character of the building do the talking, rather than filling it with lots of clutter and knick-knacks.
The Umbrian Limestone works beautifully in older properties; it just oozes charm and personality. Although it has grey undertones, it has hues of rich russet, umber, amber and olive, and the free-length layout and hand-distressed edges give it a really rustic, traditional feel. I adore this original cast-iron stove – the Umbrian sitting next to it looks like it could have been the original floor!
We’re so lucky that we get to go and visit some of our wonderful customers and see how they have used our flooring in their homes. I love seeing the different ways people use our tiles and style their homes, I always come away wanting to move in!
