From One Mill to Another – The Music Mill

1st February 2017

Set in the cosy village of Hathersage in the Peak District lies this lovingly restored property – The Music Mill. Once home to the first gramophone needle factory in the UK, The Music Mill is now a luxury holiday home.

We stumbled across it on air bnb and promptly booked a long weekend away for an upcoming family birthday. We set off after work, literally driving from one Mill to another! Cotes to Hathersage was about an hours drive and although it was very dark when we arrived the views we woke up to were so picturesque, you can’t quite believe it’s so close to home.

You could literally hear the sound of running water from the nearby stream and the slightly noisier sound of the train going over the railway bridge. We were surrounded by lots of sheep and some lovely looking country pubs and delicatessens all serving goodies made with locally sourced ingredients.

For me, it was hard not to notice the limestone floor that continued throughout the whole property. A limestone floor was the perfect choice for this rural retreat and after spending the previous days worrying if I was going to be too cold out in the sticks, I was somewhat relieved to feel the warmth of underfloor heating beneath my feet.

The limestone was not one that I recognised, it was an assortment of creams, browns and golds and was a mixture of both lengths and widths. The high variance of colour is not one that’s commonly sought after but I have to say it worked fittingly in this particular, open plan property, accompanied with a cosy log burner. The stone continued into the bathroom with a beautiful roll top bath and luxurious shower enclosure to suit.

We visited the nearby market town of Bakewell on a cold but wonderfully sunny day and took a walk in the countryside to explore the local surroundings. I think the photos speak for themselves but if you’re looking for an affordable break with family or friends in an idyllic location then this place is definitely worth a look.
