The Olympic Spirit

18th August 2016

By Rob Woodcock

The Olympics is currently in full flow, and despite a few hiccups, such as the diving pool turning green, it has been a brilliant spectacle, and a hugely successful games for Great Britain.

Here in the Floors of Stone office, we have really embraced Rio 2016.  Sports that most of us wouldn’t usually have much interest in are now on our TV screens every evening, and a constant subject of conversation the next day.

One Olympic sport we’ve been trying our hand at here at Floors of Stone is Table Tennis.  Paul O’Leary, our owner, loves the sport and purchased a table to keep here at Cotes Mill.  For a few of us, moving the table in to the showroom and playing after work has now become a regular thing.

I think it’s fair to say that in the office, the ability is quite wide ranging.  For some, this is the first time they’ve ever played Table Tennis, and just getting the ball back is an achievement.  For others however, they regularly played at school and when they were growing up, and it’s just been a case of blowing out the cobwebs.

All of a sudden we’ve become avid viewers of the Table Tennis at the Olympics, looking to see how the World’s best play and to see if we can get any tips for when we try (and fail) to re-create the shots and rallies the next day.

Since we’ve started playing we’ve definitely all improved, but Paul is a class above the rest of us and still unbeaten.  We’ll keep practising though, and maybe one day one of us will defeat him.

More importantly than who’s the best however, is that we all really enjoy playing and despite the Olympics ending on Sunday, the Table Tennis will certainly be continuing at Floors of Stone.
